Kanye West's Bully cover, shot by Daidō Moriyama: a face mid-grin, titanium grills on the teeth, the centre two blacked out. Black and white, deep contrast, photographic grain pulled all the way up.
A Moriyama in crochet is a contradiction. The photograph's whole identity is grain, and grain is the one thing yarn can't fake. So the work isn't reproduction, it's translation.
Sharan rebuilt the tonal architecture in stitch, holding the contrast that makes the image read as Moriyama (the blown highlights on the grills, the swallowed shadows around the mouth) and letting the texture of crochet stand in for the texture of film.
