The texture of the original photograph does a lot of the work in print: grain, shadow, the soft focus on the ear and jawline. In crochet, those tonal shifts have to be reconstructed without the benefit of blur. Each shadow reads as a hard boundary between one colourway and the next unless the transitions are handled row by row.
